EMG at the BRS COPs: Strengthening action for change: Advancing integrated solutions for the implementation of the BRS Conventions

The 2025 BRS COPs (BC COP-17, RC COP-12, and SC COP-1) will take place in Geneva from 28 April to 9 May, centred around the theme “Make Visible the Invisible: Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste”.

Against the backdrop of the accelerating planetary crisis, the challenges of chemical and waste management are deeply intertwined with climate action, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development. Addressing these challenges in isolation is no longer viable —integrated and synergistic approaches are essential.

To this end, three key global frameworks—the Global Framework on Chemicals, the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), and the Paris Agreement—must be considered together in an integrated manner. Aligning the implementation of these frameworks and other Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) with the BRS Conventions offers an opportunity to maximize impact, avoid fragmentation, and promote cohesive, cross sectoral solutions.

The UN Environment Management Group (EMG), as UN system-wide coordination body on the environment, is actively supporting and contributing to the implementation and integration of these Conventions and frameworks through the COPs.
