EMG Consultative Process on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

In 2020, the world community will adopt a renewed global agenda for biodiversity loss as a successor to the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. This renewed global agenda will be a stepping-stone towards achieving the CBD 2050 Vision of ‘Living in harmony with nature’ (outlined in decision 10/2). A comprehensive and participatory process to prepare the Post-2020 GBF was adopted in  decision 14/34.

Over the last decade, the Environment Management Group (EMG) has offered support to the biodiversity agenda, including contributions to the shaping of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020 and its follow-up. Some of the past EMG’s work on biodiversity include:

In the light of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework process and in response to the decision of the Open-Ended Working Group, EMG has been tasked to facilitate a contribution by the UN system to the development and implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Responding to that mandate the EMG Senior Officials have established a Consultative Process to engage the UN system, as agreed in the Terms of Reference of the Consultative Process

Outcome documents

The first outcome document produced by the Consultative Process was discussed during the first meeting and finalised on 17/01/2020. It is a compilation of UN system inputs to the CBD post-2020 global biodiversity framework, and is accessible below.


This meeting took place on 26 August 2019, in Nairobi, Kenya in the margins of the first meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group on Post-2020 Biodiversity Strategic Framework.

This page contains two calendars of events relevant to the elaboration and implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and to awareness-raising around it. The first calendar shows events and deadlines for the Consultative Process. The second calendar lists opportunities for technical inputs to the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, or for awareness-raising about the linkages between biodiversity and the main policy sectors.
