Biodiversity

Over the last decade, the Environment Management Group (EMG) has offered support to the biodiversity agenda, including contributions to the shaping of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020 and its follow-up. Some of the past EMG’s work on biodiversity include:

The Post-2020 Global Biodiversity framework

In 2020 the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will adopt a Post-2020 global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) as a successor to the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, 2011-2020. This GBF will be a stepping-stone towards achieving the CBD 2050 Vision of ‘Living in harmony with nature’ (outlined in decision 10/2). A comprehensive and participatory process to prepare the Post-2020 GBF was adopted in  decision 14/34.

In the light of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework process, EMG is facilitating the contribution of its members to this new global commitment to advance the biodiversity agenda.

In that regard a first informal meeting of the EMG took place on 26 August 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya in the margins of the first meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group on Post-2020 Biodiversity Strategic Framework, 27-29 August 2019.

EMG Consultative Process on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

At EMG SOM25 the EMG Senior Officials agreed to the establishment of an inter-agency Consultative Process on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. It is intended to prepare a system-wide contribution to the development and implementation of the post-2020 framework.

Agencies have responded to a call from UNEP ED and Chair of the EMG, Inger Anderson, by nominating their focal points. The Consultative Process will meet for the first time in the margins of the 23rd meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice, November 25th-29th. This meeting will consider the Terms of Reference for the Consultative Process, an initial compilation document of UN system contributions to the post-2020 process, a timeline of upcoming events relevant to the process, and next steps. Meeting documents and logistical details will be provided shortly.

Roadmap for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

The UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) has compiled an extensive calendar of  events relevant to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework strategic process. In addition to this, the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) has developed a timeline of relevant events being organised by the CMS Family, some of which have not been included in the UNEP-WCMC calendar.

The CBD Post-2020 portal provides further information on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and details regarding Regional and Thematic Consultations. It is also possible to view submissions to the process and information regarding efforts to make the process gender-responsive.
